Visit Indonesia - the country with 200 million people and enjoy the culture, nature, people and wildlife. Begin
your trip in Medan, North Sumatra or Jakarta or Bali If you start from Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra, it is served almost daily with flights from Singapore by Silk Air and Garuda Indonesia. The main points of interest are the Batak people, Batak traditional houses and Lake Toba with its tiny island in the middle - Samosir Island. After 3-4 days touring you have two options; to drive back to Medan and fly out to Java or to continue overland to West Sumatra the land of Minangkabau via Sibolga, Tarutung and Padangsidempuan. This overland journey will pass through villages, rice fields, farms, hills, rivers and rain forest.

You will reach Bukit Tinggi or high hill, a city located on the highlands in West Sumatra. This land belongs to the Indonesian Matrilineal System which is still strongly followed by the local people. They have beautiful houses built on stilts and decorated with buffalo horn. Padang is the capital of the province which ia also  the name of people who come from this area; "orang Padang " known as the best business people in the country. In every city throughout Indonesia you will see " warung Padang" - local restaurants that sell Padang food which is quite spicy.

After 3-4 days in West Sumatra you can move on to Java, the most populated island with 100 million people. Visit Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, see Sunda Kelapa the old harbor with hundreds of local boats, National Monument Park with its 100 meter high monument with a 33kg frame gold on the top, the National museum which consists of archeological statues from all over Indonesia and Miniature Park where you can see 26 traditional houses from the 26 provinces of Indonesia and where you can find a variety of handicrafts exhibited.
 


For Nature lovers, drive to the west part of the island to Carita Beach where you can take a boat to Ujung Kulon to see the one horned Rhino, go trekking in rain-forest and enjoy some bird watching. Or, from Jakarta, drive to the Bogor Botanical Gardens and then continue to Bandungthe, center of the Sunda land, to see the Tangkuban Prahu Volcano, Tea Plantation and Angklung, the bamboo musical instrument. From Jakarta fly to Yogyakarta where you can visit Borobudur and Prambanan temples, visit a batik factory and silver smiths; or drive on to East Java to view the famous Mt Bromo volcano, Baluran or Sukamade National Reserve; or drive to Semarang to catch flight for Pangkalanbun in Central Kalimantan to see the Orangutans, proboscis monkeys, leaf eater monkeys and birds.

Maybe you will choose to visit East Kalimantan to see the Dayaks and their long houses, fresh water dolphins, orangutans, proboscis monkeys while relaxing and enjoying a River Safari on the Mahakam River.
Where will you go from here?

You may fly to Bali for it's beaches, festivals, temples, dances etc. or you may fly on to Sulawesi to visit the land of hanging graves, class 4 white water rafting, the Makasar and Torajan traditional houses and the many number of festivals. If you enjoy diving, then go diving in Manado in the North of Sulawesi.

Maybe you would rather fly on to Irian Jaya (known as Papua) where you will experience the Dani People in the Baliem Valley or Agats - Asmat in the South.

Or travel to the South East to the Lesser Sunda Islands consisting of Flores, Komodo, Sumba, Timor, Alor, Lembata, Lombok and Sumbawa which is known for its colorful textiles (Ikat). Here you will find the 2-3 meter long Komodo Dragon, traditional villages in Flores, Sumba and Lombok, wonderful textiles can be found on almost every island with a variety of patterns and colors. Visit famous Kelimutu, the Three Coloed Lakes in Flores.........one of the wonders of the world. The lakes are Blue, Turquoise-Green and Brown.

The length of your travels in Indonesia is up to you but you will never run out of wonderfully, intriguing places to visit and explore. You will need more than one journey to see all of the sights and enjoy all of the experiences to be found in the Indonesian Archipelago.
